August 2003 Recalls

Recall of Trisonic Nightlights 
Manufacturer: Trisonic/Eastern America Trio Products, of Flushing, N.Y.
Hazard: The nightlight poses a serious electrocution, electric shock, burn and fire hazard to consumers.  Incidents/Injuries: Trisonic has received a report of a nightlight exploding,
resulting in laceration injuries to a consumer.  Description: The recalled nightlights have a yellow exterior shaped like a smiley face. A label on the back of the nightlight reads, "Trisonic, 4W/120V custom made in China for Trisonic, Queens, NY, TS-45431."

Recall of Children's Art Supply Sets
Manufacturer: Creative Kids Inc. of Monsey, N.Y.
Hazard: The sets contain mini-cutters with razor blades which pose a laceration hazard to young children.  Incidents/Injuries: The Commission and Creative Kids are aware of an incident
where an 8-year-old girl received minor cuts to her finger when she used the mini-cutter.  Description: The 87-piece art supply sets were sold in solid wood grain boxes. The sets contain
crayons, markers, scissors, water and oil paints, brushes, etc. A label on the box reads "JUMBO ART CASE 87 pieces" and "Item No. 11519."

Recall to Replace "Tiffany" and "Josephine" Crib Drop-Side Rails
"Babi Italia is recalling to replace crib drop-side rails for about 2,000 "Tiffany" and "Josephine"
model cribs. The slats on the drop-side rails can come loose or detach...CPSC and LaJobi have
received 41 reports of slats separating from rails of the crib. One child became entrapped between slats that came loose. Ten children fell out of the crib when the slats came out of the drop-side rail.  No serious injuries have been reported."

Recall of Little People(R) Animal Sounds Farms
"Fisher-Price is voluntarily recalling about 67,000 Little People
(R) Animal Sounds Farms manufactured from June 17, 2002 through July 31, 2002.  Two small metal screws that hold the toy "stall doors" in place can come off, posing a choking hazard to young children.  Fisher-Price has received 33 reports of the screws coming off the toy, including four reports where a screw was found in the child's mouth and one report of a child that aspirated a screw
into his lung."

Recall of Plush Bears and Snowman Dolls
"Dollar Tree Stores is voluntarily recalling about 407,000 plush bears and 221,000 snowman dolls.  Buttons on the jacket of these toys can be pulled off, posing a choking hazard to young
children.  CPSC and Dollar Tree have received no reports of injuries or incidents."

Recall to Replace Detachable Plugs On Power Adapters
Comarco is voluntarily recalling to replace about 125,000 detachable plugs on power adapters. The plug can break open and expose live wires, posing an electrocution or electric shock hazard to consumers.  Comarco has received 12 reports of the plugs breaking open, though no injuries have been reported.

Recall of Disney 'Toy Story' Dolls
Walt Disney Parks and Resorts is voluntarily recalling about 40,000 'Woody' dolls sold at their outlets in Florida. The doll's clothing has buttons that can detach, posing a choking hazard
for young children.  Disney has received one report of a child removing a button from the Woody doll.  No injuries have been reported.

Recall to Repair Girls' Hooded Winter Jackets
S. Rothschild & Co. is voluntarily recalling for repair about 37,000 girls' iridescent, hooded winter jackets. The rubber petal and metal snap can break off of the jacket, posing a choking
hazard to young children.  S. Rothschild has received two reports of the rubber petal coming off the jacket, including one child who reportedly put the petal in her mouth.  The snaps have come off in subsequent testing."

Recall of Baseline Design Beanbag Chairs
"CPSC is announcing the recall of about 30000 beanbag chairs manufactured by Baseline Design with zippers that can be opened, allowing access to the polystyrene beads inside the chairs posing a suffocation hazard to young children who can unzip the chair and inhale the small beads. Baseline Design is aware of three incidents in which the chairs were unzipped freely. Two involved young children who were able to open the beanbag chair zippers and handle the small polystyrene beads, including one child who received medical attention after inhaling the beads."

Recall of Duckie Ring Rattle/Teethers
"Prestige Toy Corp. is voluntarily recalling about 4,600 Duckie Ring rattle/teethers. The rattle may break, causing small beads to fall out, which presents a potential choking hazard to young children. CPSC and Prestige have not received any reports of incidents. This recall is being
conducted to prevent the possibility of injuries."

Recall Round-Up of Deadly Products
"CPSC is urging Americans to join its 'recall round-up' of 12 hazardous products still found in millions of homes.  Most of these have been involved in children's deaths.  The goal of this recall round-up is to convince consumers to throw away, repair, or replace these hazardous
products.  Despite recall notices and public warnings, CPSC believes that many products with the potential to seriously injure or kill are still being used by consumers."

Infant Swings
"Fisher-Price is recalling about 42,000 Smart Response Swings for in-home inspection and repair.  It is possible to misassemble the seats of these swings so that they appear secure, but are not.  If the seat of the swing is not properly attached, the seat and baby can flip forward."

Whirlpool Dehumidifier Recall
"Whirlpool Corp. is voluntarily recalling about 1.4 million dehumidifiers.  The dehumidifiers can overheat, posing a fire hazard.  Whirlpool has received 13 reports of the dehumidifiers overheating and causing fires, three of which resulted in extensive property damage.  No injuries have been reported.  The recalled dehumidifiers were sold under the Whirlpool, Kenmore and ComfortAire brand names.  The dehumidifiers are white plastic, about 2-feet high and have a front-mounted water bucket.  They have serial numbers that begin with QG, QH, QJ, QK or QL.  The serial number can be found on a label located on the wall behind the water bucket." Recall of Snowman Holiday Porcelain Lanterns
"WASHI Commodities Inc. is voluntarily recalling about 33,000 Snowman Holiday Porcelain Lanterns.  These snowman lanterns can crack or catch fire due to excessive heat from the tealight candles.  There have been 18 reports of the snowman lanterns cracking or catching on fire, including one consumer who suffered a burn to her finger."  Post until April, 2002


Recall of Christmas Light Sets
"Flora-Lite Co is voluntarily recalling about 7,500 strings of Christmas lights.  The lights' wires can be easily pulled out of the plugs and light sockets.  The lights could pose electrocution and electric shock hazards to consumers and could pose a fire hazard.  CPSC and Flora-Lite Co. are not aware of any injuries or incidents associated with these Christmas lights.  This recall is being conducted to prevent injuries."  Post until April, 2002


Recall of Pine Tree Candles
Dillard's, Inc. is voluntarily recalling about 12,000 Pine Tree Candles.  The candles can collapse, causing the flame to spread and ignite decorative glitter and paint, which poses a fire hazard to consumers.  Dillard's has received one report of a candle that collapsed and spread the flame.  No injuries or property damage were reported."   Post until April, 2002


Recall of Candele Glitter Candles
"Walgreen Co. is voluntarily recalling about 50,500 Candele glitter candles.  The glitter on the candles can ignite, posing a fire hazard. Walgreens received one report of the glitter on the candle catching fire.  No injuries or property damage have been reported." Post until April, 2002


Recall of Children's Board Books
"Candlewick Press is recalling about 78,670 'Bunny My Honey' children's board books printed in Italy.  The plastic lamination on the board book may peel off, posing a choking hazard for young children."    Post until March, 2002


Recall of "Blast Balls" Toys

"JA-RU Inc. is voluntarily recalling about 43,000 'Blast Balls' toys.  When struck together, the toys create a cracking sound similar to that of a cap gun.  The directions instruct consumers to strike one ball against the other in the palm of hand to create the cracking sound.  When consumers strike the "Blast Balls" together, sparks can ignite, posing a burn hazard. CPSC and JA-RU have received six reports of injuries, including minor burns to hands and fingers.  The recalled toys are packaged as 'Super Bang...Blast Balls'.  The balls are sold two in a pack, in a variety of colors." Bicycle Recalls
"Pacific Cycle is voluntarily recalling to repair about 2,500 Ally Cat tandem bicycle accessories. The hitch connecting the tandem accessory to the host bicycle can fail, causing the tandem accessory to become unstable, which poses the risk of injury to riders." Post until March, 2002


"Performance Inc. is voluntarily recalling 1,150 wheel rims on Performance Road bicycles.  The rims can crack causing the rider to lose control of the bicycle, fall, and suffer injuries." Post until March, 2002 


STK International Announce Recall of Children's Toys

  • "2 PC Tambourine Set": Two tambourines consisting of a colorful plastic ring
    with three balls attached. Inside of the balls are beads that create a rattle
    sound when shaken. On each side of the tambourine is a sticker with a female
    cartoon character and the number 985.
  • "Bathtime Water Wheel": A multi-colored plastic toy with a suction cup base
    and six small cups attached to a water wheel. "Made in China NO:368" is
    printed on the back of the water wheel.
  • "Funny Loco Wind-Up": A multi-colored train with a pig character on a sticker
    placed on both sides of the toy. "Made in China NO:883" is printed on the
    back of the train.
  • "Pull Back Duck in Boat": A plastic blue and white boat with colored stickers
    on the side, a transparent red windshield, and white duck mounted on top of
    the boat. The toy also comes with a miniature fishing pole and a plastic
    lobster. A yellow sticker on boat reads, "My Baby Products" and "PULLBACK
    DUCKS IN BOAT, MADE IN CHINA."

Recall of Skateboard Helmets
"World Industries Inc. is voluntarily recalling 10,000 skateboard helmets.  These helmets failed impact testing required under CPSC's Safety Standard for Bicycle Helmets.  Riders wearing these helmets are not adequately protected from falls and could suffer head injuries or death."  Post until November, 2001


Recall of Dollhouse Furniture Sets Sold at Target Stores
"XL Machine Ltd is voluntarily recalling about 10,000 sets of dollhouse bathroom furniture.  The yellow paint on the furniture contains lead, which can present a risk of lead poisoning to young children."  Post until November, 2001


LactoFree(TM) Recall
"Mead Johnson Nutritionals is requesting that consumers who may have purchased LactoFree(TM) infant formula sample packs containing two 3 oz. ready-to-use Nursette(TM) bottles and two Easy One(TM) single serve powder packets return the sample pack to the place of purchase for a full refund. The six sample packs in question do not list ingredients on the back of the box. Infants allergic to milk protein run the risk of a serious or life threatening allergic reaction if they consume this product. There have been no reports to Mead Johnson from consumers or health care professionals about any infants who have become ill as a result of this labeling error.No other sizes or forms of LactoFree are affected."

Recall of Swings on Backyard Gym Sets

"Hedstrom Corp. and Backyard Products is recalling to repair about 190,000 Star Cruiser and Rocket Rider swings on backyard gym sets.  Screws that hold the swing together can fall out, causing the seat to fall to the ground, posing an injury risk to children.  Hedstrom has received 291 reports of seats separating, including 19 children who suffered lacerations, scrapes and bruises."

Recall of Boys' Vests
"Saks Incorporated is voluntarily recalling about 14,500 boys' vests.  The elastic toggle cord on the end of the zipper pulls can loosen and come off, posing a choking hazard to young children. Saks has received one report of a toggle coming off.  No injuries have been reported.  This recall is being conducted to prevent the possibility of injury."

Bungee Baby Jumpers and Wipe Warmers
"Cosco Inc. and Safety 1st are recalling about 171,000 bungee baby jumpers and 100,600 baby wipe warmers. Metal clasps can detach from the bungee cord, causing the unit to fall to the floor.  A wipe warmer is an electric appliance that warms baby wipes.  Cracks in the interior basin of these wipe warmers can allow moisture to contact the electrical components."  Post until July, 2001.

"Fisher-Price is recalling about 20,000 infant and toddler Intelli-Table toys for repair.  Two red knobs on the toy can break off, creating small parts that can pose a choking hazard for young children."  Post until July, 2001.

McDonald's "Scooter Bug" Happy Meal Toys
McDonald's Corp. is voluntarily recalling about 234,000 "Scooter Bug" toys.  The toys were distributed with McDonald's Happy Meals for children under 3 years of age.  The bug's antenna can break off, posing a choking hazard to young children.  McDonald's has received two reports of children choking and one report of a child gagging on the broken off antenna.  Post until June, 2001.

Recent Death Prompts Search for Recalled Play Yards/Cribs
Baby Trend Inc. is repeating its announcement of the 1995 recall of Home and Roam and Baby Express portable cribs/play yards.  These cribs/play yards can collapse and entrap an infant.  In January 2001, a 9-month-old baby in Longview, Wash., died of asphyxiation when her neck was caught in the V-shape created by the collapsed sides of her crib/play yard.  There have been three other deaths and three reports of babies found not breathing (who were revived) associated with these products.  Post until June, 2001.


NIKE Jordan Trunner Cross-Training Shoes
NIKE is recalling about 225,000 pairs of its Jordan Trunner LX and Jordan Trunner 2000 cross-training shoes. The shoes have a thin metal strip on the outside of the heel that can protrude from the shoe and form a sharp edge that can cut consumers.

Graco Highchairs
Graco Children's Products is voluntarily recalling about 860,000 highchairs.  The chair's legs can come out, causing the chair to fall to the ground.  Graco has received 108 reports of the highchair legs coming out of the seat, including 105 injuries. Injuries have included a mild concussion, two broken noses, six cuts requiring stitches, black eyes, and bumps and bruises.

Simmons Announce Recall to Repair Cribs
Simmons Juvenile Products is voluntarily recalling more than 68,600 cribs for repair.  Bracket hooks that are used to position the height of the mattress can break, causing the mattress to collapse.  Simmons has received more than 800 reports of bracket hooks breaking. In one case, a 6-month-old hit his chin on the side rail when the mattress dropped.

Barbie Sunglasses
The frames of the sunglasses can break, allowing the petroleum distillate and floating glitter to leak out.  IMT Accessories has received one report of a six-year-old child who received chemical burns in her right eye as a result of petroleum distillates leaking from the sunglasses when she was playing.

National Shooting Sports Foundation Recall to Replace Project HomeSafe Gun Locks
National Shooting Sports Foundation is recalling about 400,000 gun locks for replacement. Under certain conditions, the locks can open without use of a key.  The locks resemble a bicycle cable lock and have a red cable with a black padlock. Red vinyl bands around the top and bottom of the locks read, "PROJECT" and "HOMESAFE." "MADE IN CHINA" and "30mm" are imprinted on the bottom of the locks.

Pottery Barn Kids Recall of Wooden Pull Toy
Pottery Barn Kids is recalling 2900 wooden dog pull toys. Wooden pegs can come off of these pull toys, posing a choking hazard to young children.  Pottery Barn Kids has received a report of one peg coming off of the toy.  No injuries have been reported.

Kolcraft Recall of Tot Rider Walkers
Kolcraft Enterprises, Inc. is recalling 3356 Tot Rider walkers.  The cover on the walker's removable music center can break off, allowing small parts to fall from the product, creating a choking hazard to young children.  Kolcraft has not received any reports of injuries.

CPSC: Carter's Recall to Repair Infant Jumpsuits 
Carter's is recalling 600,000 infant jumpsuits for repair.  A ribbon that runs through the zipper pull tab can detach, resulting in a choking hazard.  Carter's received four reports of children detaching the ribbons, putting them in their mouths, and starting to gag or choke. No injuries have been reported.

Seattle Bike Supply Recall of Children's Bicycles
Seattle Bike Supply is recalling 1400 children's bicycles.  Because the bikes' pedals are too low to the ground, they fail to meet federal bicycle standards.  Children can lose control when a pedal strikes the ground.  Seattle Bike Supply has received one report of a 4-year-old boy whose pedal struck the ground while riding one of these bikes causing him to fall.  No injuries were reported.

BBC International Ltd is recalling 38,000 pairs of Crayola toddler boots.  The toggle, a small plastic ball attached to the laces, can detach, posing a choking hazard to young children.

Designer Classics LLC is recalling 11,000 of its children's jeans and overalls manufactured under the BABY GUESS and GUESS GIRLS label.  The small decorative metal appliques on the legs of the garments can come loose and separate, posing a choking hazard to young children.  Post until May, 2001

Recall to Remove Squirting Fish from Bath Toys
Sassy Inc. is replacing about 370,000 squirting fish in the Scoop Pour 'N Squirt and Bath Time Pals bath toys. The fish's size, texture, shape and easy compressibility make it possible for an infant to compress the toy and place it in his or her mouth.  If the toy reaches the back of the mouth and expands, it may block the child's airway.

Cosco High Chairs
About 1 million Options 5 High Chairs because in the recline position, the seats can separate from the frame and fall, and in the upright position the seats can slip from their set height to the lowest position or fall to the floor.  The recalled chairs have model number 03-286 and a four digit manufacture date from December 1, 1997, through August 11, 2000, printed on the bottom of the seat.  A free repair kit may be ordered by Cosco (1-800-221-6736) or visit their web sitePost until April, 2001.

Curious George Musical Pull Toys
The toy is a stuffed fabric toy with Curious George holding two red and yellow balloons, attached by two retractable green fabric covered elastic cords. It can hang from cribs, playpens, or other juvenile furniture.  The toy has two elastic cords that form a loop, posing a strangulation risk to young children.

Small springs inside the toy can break loose, posing a choking and laceration hazard to young children.  Take these toys away from children immediately.  Contact Playskool toll free at 1-877-518-9743 or contact their web site at www.hasbro.com to arrange for a free, redesigned replacement toy.  Post until December 16, 2000.

Playskool Klackeroo
The toy's brightly colored knobs can detach and allow small geometric pieces to comes loose, posing a choking hazard to young children.  Take these toys away from children immediately.  Contact Playskool toll free at 1-877-671-9764 or contact their web site at www.hasbro.com to arrange for a free, redesigned replacement toy.  Post until January 14, 2001.
 

Infant Car Seats/Carriers
Century Products is recalling 4 million infant car seats/carriers.  When the seat is used as an infant carrier, the handle can break.  An infant inside the carrier can fall to the ground and suffer serious injuries. Century is providing parents with new handles for their carriers. Installing the new handle will help keep your baby safe and secure. Post until March 14, 2001.
